Polyphenols: plant compounds that act as powerful antioxidants
Polyphenols are plant compounds found in fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, cocoa, and legumes. They protect cells from damage, lower chronic inflammation, and reduce risk of major diseases.
That is the range where large population studies begin to see lower risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive decline, and frailty.23 Measured intake across US and European populations runs 600 to 900 mg a day, and varies with diet quality.1

Figures like these move depending on how intake is measured and which food database is used. One 2024 study of 9,008 UK adults, using week-long food diaries, put the middle of the range at 1,536 mg a day.10
Which foods carry them
Polyphenols are concentrated in deeply pigmented fruits, in green tea, in herbs and spices, and in leafy greens. Berries carry anthocyanins. Green tea carries catechins. Turmeric carries curcuminoids. Coffee, cocoa, olive oil, red wine, nuts, and legumes all contribute.
Intake is a matter of frequency more than of any single food. A diet reaching the upper ranges above contains several polyphenol-dense foods every day rather than one of them occasionally.

Aronia, also called chokeberry, is among the most polyphenol-dense fruits grown in North America and is rarely eaten outside of juice and jam.
What polyphenols do
Polyphenols are studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and for the signals they send inside cells. What follows is what has been observed in the studies cited.

Why the food matters, not only the milligrams
How much of a polyphenol the body actually absorbs varies widely from one compound to the next, and depends on what it arrives with. The fats and fibers in the same meal change it. So does the gut microbiome, which converts many polyphenols into the forms that end up circulating in the blood.8
That is the limit of any milligram figure. It describes what is in the food, not what gets absorbed, and the gap between the two changes with the compound and the meal.
It is also why polyphenols are hard to isolate into supplements. In the studies above, intake was measured as diet: whole foods eaten in combination, with the fibers and fats that come with them.
